350.That is roughly the number of college fairs we attended last year. 350 college fairs equate to hundreds of brochures and inquiry cards handed out to thousands of prospective students with countless questions. Every so often, somebody will come by and surprise us with a unique question. But for the most part, most questions will be general. Don’t worry; we don’t expect you to stress about the next question that will make you stand out from the crowd. We don’t mind hearing the same questions, as long as the questions are relevant to you. The purpose of this blog is to help you to take less of a passive role during these college fairs. Be proactive and have a plan. A foolproof game plan.

As summer comes to a close (where did the time go?!), my colleagues and I are turning our attention to Fall travel season. Many of us will visit upwards of ninety high schools during the months of September, October, and November, in nearly 50 states and in over five different countries. We will also be attending receptions and holding interview weekends in major cities like Seattle, New York, Boston, San Francisco, etc.

USC prides itself on being a “Global University,” but what exactly does that mean? For starters, we have more international students than any private institution in the country (15% in last year’s freshman class!). We believe that having students from different countries around the globe contributes to a positive learning environment by allowing for various viewpoints and opinions to be highlighted in the classroom.

2013 is already well under way in the Office of Admission as we continue to read applications. Like our students, our staff enjoyed a nice break from coming into the office to celebrate the holidays with family and friends. In order to give you a better idea of how our staff spends time off, I’ve collected a few pictures to highlight the various activities (and climates!) we experienced during the recent holiday season.

Today’s post is written by guest blogger John Marfield, Assistant Director of Admission. John is one of the territory managers for the NYC area.
During the fall, we host several off-campus Open Houses, called Discover USC. This event is one of the most comprehensive overviews of the campus and the application process.

We admission officers are currently in the thick of what we call travel season. We’re busy visiting prospective students at high schools across the country. A typical high school visit consists of providing information about USC– where we’re located, what types of academic programs we offer, what campus life is like– and also includes information about the admission process and application.

The London Olympics also present an opportunity to cheer on current and former Trojans!

It’s officially summer in Southern California! Campus is a bit quieter, the temperatures are getting warmer, and most importantly, the pace in our office has slowed down. We’re also taking advantage of this downtime to explore Los Angeles and all that our city has to offer our students.

Things have started to calm down around the office now that all freshman decisions have been made. We’re still working on reviewing transfer files, but our staff recently took a quick trip to Reno, NV to attend a professional conference.

It’s finally summer here at USC, which means our campus is quieter, the days are warmer, and our office is wrapping up making transfer decisions and gearing up and preparing for next year. Since we have a little more free time on our hands, we thought now would be a great opportunity to get to know our blog readers a bit better! We’ll be opening up the comments section on a few blog posts, starting with this one.
