Quinn and me: I feel like our choice in glasses accurately reflect our choice in majors…
Though I LOVED studying English in college (it’s useful—I promise!), I’m a little curious about all of the other majors out there. What if I had chosen to study something entirely different? Would time and space be irrevocably altered?! Probably not, but at the very least I would have had a totally different college experience. I decided the only way to know was to “go back” to school…this time as a Music Industry major!

During the fall of each school year, I travel…a lot. I wake up early, catch flights across the country, and search the Hertz parking lot for rental cars with backup cameras. During this time, I’m hardly ever at my desk, I’m meeting tons of awesome students, and learning about the cool and exciting things students are doing. But when I’m not on an airplane or at the rental car counter, here’s what I’m probably doing…

It’s Natalie Guevara and I’m excited to start working with our blog. While coming up with topic ideas, I thought of common questions we get from prospective students and one of my favorites is always: what’s it like to be a student at USC? And although I’m an alumna of the university and had my own great experiences…I really want you to hear from current students with a bigger range of majors/involvement/background/etc. So rather than hear about all the cool things I have to say (many of you get enough of that), I’ll find current students to tell you about their experiences. For our first installment, we have Edwin Saucedo, the Student Body President for the Undergraduate Student Government. He is originally from South Gate, CA and is set to graduate this coming May 2017. Check out what he had to say.

Question: Have you seen that movie, Admission with Tina Fey? Is your job really like that?
Yes, I’ve seen that movie. In fact, I watched it on a Virgin America flight a few years ago on my way to NYC for one of my recruitment trips (How meta is that?) Tina Fey plays an admission counselor from a highly selective university, and there’s a scene of her doing high school visits that made me giggle a little too hard in my aisle seat (ok, fine…it was a middle seat). Tina does several vocal warm-ups and psychs herself up before reciting the same exact presentation about her school several times a day. This week starts my first recruitment trip of the season in New York City, and I’ll be visiting four to five high schools a day to chat about the USC experience. Our applicant pool is large and diverse and my applicants’ understanding of USC and the college admission process will vary dramatically. Following are some of the places where you’ll find me meeting students this fall in the Big Apple!

Senior year is tough! You’re in your hardest classes to date, you’re taking on more and more responsibilities, you’re hitting a milestone almost every week…and then we ask you to apply to college. 12th grade may never be easy, but you can certainly make it less hard. Though each student’s college process is unique, there are a handful of behaviors/mind sets that I have seen cause unnecessary stress time and time again. Some call them the Four Horseman of the Common Appocalypse (and by some I mean me), but they are all avoidable if you know how to recognize the signs!

Many transfer students are beginning to hear from us with decisions. If you haven’t already, don’t panic. We will contact everyone by June 1st with either a request for spring grades or a decision. Which basically means more waiting…sorry. For those of you have already been admitted, or are wondering what the next steps will be if you are admitted, this blog’s for you.

Every year, USC admits students to the spring semester, expecting to enroll about 300-500 of those students. Many people assume spring admission is our waitlist. And while we may be able to move some of the students to the fall semester, spring admission is not a waitlist. Spring admission is an admission offer to USC.

What a wonderful time of year! Admitted students recently heard that they are part of the Trojan Family and now it is time for students to make the important decision of where to go to college. At USC, we have many programs for students to get one last look before they make their decision.

April 1st, while right around the corner, probably feels like a million miles away for those waiting to hear from colleges. We get it…the waiting game is the worst! Here are some ideas of how you can pass the time while we wrap up the process on our end.
