As the fall months slowly disappear one by one, USC’s application deadlines inch closer. One month from today is December 1, 2011. This also happens to be USC’s Merit Scholarship Consideration application deadline for first-year applicants. What exactly does this mean?

This weekend is Trojan Family Weekend! Trojan Family Weekend is one of the most exciting, engaging, and long-standing traditions at USC. As you may have guessed, it is a weekend that brings parents, grandparents, and siblings to campus to experience some of the great things that USC offers our students on a daily basis.

When some students think about going to college, they actually plan on going to more than one college. Many students will spend 1 or 2 years at a community college or other university prior to transferring to USC. There are various reasons why students choose this route of getting to USC.

Our office has a running joke: “How’s your psychology major?” This question, while valid, is one of the more common questions we hear from students. I can absolutely see why a student would want to ask about a specific major they’re interested in, but there might be a better way of phrasing this type of question.

Students are always interested in what there is to do on campus. Of course, there are clubs and organizations, athletics, Greek life, movie screenings, guest lectures, community service programs, and many other things.

Over the next couple months, our admission staff is going to be spread out across the country and the world. Why, you might ask? We’re doing it to come meet you, your families, and anyone who is interested in learning more about USC. It’s true- we bring a little bit of USC (and quite a few USC representatives) directly to many cities.

As most of you already know, more goes into applying to colleges and universities than just submitting your grades and test scores. The qualitative components of an application carry a lot of weight in our admission decisions. One such component is the letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, or college advisor.

It’s officially fall, which means most college admission counselors are out traveling around the country and meeting with prospective students. A typical day for me goes something like this: wake up before 7am, visit 4 high schools throughout the day, maybe squeeze in a late lunch or nap, head to a college fair, try to eat a healthy dinner, sleep in a hotel, repeat.
